About Lattimore & Hines Connection
Please sign in to see more.
According to the records we have found, Catharine Lattimore nee Hines was born in 1792. During my early research there was some controversy regarding her parents names and Catharine's age at time of conviction. Her death certificate incorrectly names her parents as Dinah Latimore & William Hines.

If we have the correct information: at 15 years of age, Catharine Hines was married, after Banns, to Thomas Lattimore. The marriage took place on 21 December 1807, at St. Martins, Birmingham. Both Thomas and Catharine signed with an 'X'. Witnesses of the marriage, George Johnson and Ann Jones, also signed with an "X"

If as indicated by the above dates, Catharine was married for 7 years (before effective birth control) ; we do not know if she did/or not have children. We do not know if her first husband Thomas was dead or simply left behind with the old life. I have been informed by members of the Warwick Family history Society that most of the records from that era were destroyed by a "well meaning" clerk.

The following convictions have been recorded in the England & Wales Criminal Registers: (1) Summer of 1806; stealing good in shop - acquitted.
 (2) January 1807; Catherine & Phoebe Hines; convicted for larceny "discharged by Proclomation". (a few months prior to her marriage).
 (3) Catharine was tried at the Warwick Lent Assizes 29 March 1813 for larceny/privately, stealing printed cotton of William Avery. She was sentenced to death. This sentence was later commuted to 14 years transportation. After arriving at Port Jackson on the ship Wanstead 7th January 1814, she was sent to work at the Parramatta Women's factory - as a mantua maker (ladies capes). Catharine's surname was recorded as "Letterman" on the ships manifest.

Approximately 5 months after her arrival, Catharine married John Riley (son of convict Susannah Nairn/Riley - John was a free man by birth). They were married by the Reverend Samuel Marsden, 13 June 1814 at St. John's,Parramatta NSW. Catharine signed with an 'x' as did the two witnesses to the marriage, Richard Clarkson and Maria Hayward.

Remember that 14 years transportation was in fact a life sentence and convicts would come here thinking (knowing) that they would never return to England. Hence many of them started a new life, a new family in a new land. Also, marriage was the only way women could escape the confines of the Parramatta Women's Factory (prison).

NOTE: Catherine was not alone in Australia. She had three (3) sisters who also came out as convicts. Martha (1806), Maria (1806), Phoebe (1817). Martha Hines born 1785, Phoebe Hines born 1786, Mariah Hines born 1789, and Catherine Hines (aka Lattimore) born 1792 were four of six children born to William and Dinah Hines in Birmingham, Warwickshire. The others were were William (b.1795) and Nancy (born & died 26 December 1799). It is rumoured that William Hines (Snr) spent a few months in gaol for theft and that his son William Hines (Jnr) came out as convict too, but I have not yet found the proof that the William listed is ours.
